"Detroit-area indie rock quintet Bear vs. Shark only formed officially in 2001, but guitarist John Gaviglio,
vocalist Marc Paffi, bassist Mike Muldoon, second guitarist Derek Kiesgen, and drummer Brandon Moss had known each other
since junior high school. Influenced by crushing highs and soul-searching lows of '90s emo and indie, Bear vs. Shark
self-released a debut and gigged throughout the metro Detroit and Lansing area, all the while waiting for most of its
membership to graduate from college. Once that hurdle was conquered, the band signed with the New York indie Equal
Vision, which released the ambitiously textured rock of Right Now, You're in the Best of Hands in July 2003. The album's
release was followed by a year of heavy touring (with acts like Hopesfall, Hey Mercedes, and Coheed & Cambria), so
heavy that Bear vs. Shark's website recounted numerous tour van mishaps. By September 2004 Bear vs. Shark were back in
Michigan and making plans for a second album; Terrorhawk was released in mid-2005. Sadly, the bandmembers announced
their breakup before the year's end."

"Bear vs. Shark's debut is a cage match between volatility and
anticipation. Visceral squalls of guitar swirl over triumphant drum fills in the sweltering heat of "Ma Jolie"
and "Campfire," whipping the songs into an angular frenzy that suggests June of 44 after a bottle of mini
thins. But anticipation isn't going to give up that easy. "MPS" sees vocalist Marc Paffi flying off the
turnbuckle with a fresh supply of fabulously wordy lyrics ("These are landmine carburetors," "Your crutch
and your cross, your voltage your watts") and a smoky-voiced sensuality that hesitates at all the right moments.
The blousy minor-chord strum of "MPS"' lone guitar then gives way flawlessly to the hopeful rush of
"Second," and all of a sudden, seven rounds into the match, volatility and anticipation have shaken hands in
the middle of the ring, united by Paffi's earnest yelp and guitars that never wander too far into sideways indie rock
land to forget about uplifting melody or honest, good-old rocking. Both "Buses/No Buses" and "Don't Tell
the Horses the Stable's on Fire" belch forth with jury-rigged rock riffs that still manage to hit with proper
gut-wrenching fury. (In fact, the guitar line that unifies the former bears a strong resemblance to Eddie Van Halen's
memorable riff from "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love.") Right Now, You're in the Best of Hands certainly sheds pounds
of skin-shredding emotion during its duration. But like the early emo experiments of Rites of Spring, the source of such
sentiment can get obscured behind the very same obtuse lyricisms and freely shifting, often punishing instrumentation
that make Bear vs. Shark's sound work so well. Put another way, it can take a few listens of Bear vs. Shark's debut
before you're able to pick a side to root for."

Terrorhawk:
 
"Terrorhawk delivers a thousand percent on the promise of Right Now,
You're in the Best of Hands, Bear vs Shark's 2003 debut. It's an impassioned and anxious indie rock stomp with a
straight line drawn to the tension and urgency of D.C. post-hardcore. But it also bleeds sensitivity, and has a novel's
touch in its opaque yet highly evocative lyrics. Mark Paffi is a presence in the center — he's not quite singing,
but it's not a shout either, and this catch-all style is responsible for some of the album's most incredible melodies
("5, 6 Kids," "Entrance of the Elected"). Bear vs Shark also get a lot of mileage out of stopping
and starting a blaring electric guitar, and get an assist from programming whiz Matthew Dear here and there.
"Baraga Embankment" aligns brass instruments next to those guitars, "Seven Stop Hold Restart" and
"Catamaran" channel Fugazi effectively, and "I F****d Your Dad" has a little bit of a Modest Mouse
feel. There's a tangible depth to Terrorhawk. There's ballast in its songs, so they really sink in. It's that novelistic
quality again — it takes some doing to let it surround you. But by the time the six-minute "Song About Old
Roller Coaster" comes around, the album's been through surging melodies ("5, 6 Kids" again), manically
dense layers (the absolutely crazy "Heard Iron Bug, 'They're Coming to Town"), and slippery little interludes
("India Foot" sounds like a field recording from a video arcade), and you're in for the long haul. Powerful,
visceral, rewarding, and just a little confounding, Bear vs Shark is a band with both sharp claws and razor teeth. Watch
out — the Terrorhawk will slice you good."
